{"id":1359,"date":"2016-09-10T22:26:14","date_gmt":"2016-09-11T08:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/?post_type=flawles_activity&#038;p=1359"},"modified":"2022-08-01T06:59:56","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T16:59:56","slug":"hilo-hawaii-activities-2-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/hilo-hawaii-activities-2-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Hilo Hawaii Activities in 2 Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> Hilo Hawaii Activities in 2 Days<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To cover Hilo and East Big Island in 2 days isn\u2019t easy.\u00a0 To be the most efficient we need to divide up Hilo into 2 geographical areas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Day 1:\u00a0 Downtown Hilo and surrounding area<\/p>\n<p>Day 2:\u00a0 Volcano National Park and Kalapana lava flows<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DAY 1: Downtown Hilo and Surrounding Area<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breakfast at Kens House of Pancakes<\/li>\n<li>Lili\u2019uokalani Park and Gardens.\u00a0 Almost across the street from Kens.\u00a0 Drive past the golf course twoward the water.\u00a0 See my post at: <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/liliuokalani-park-and-gardens\/\">https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/liliuokalani-park-and-gardens\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Walking tour of Downtown.\u00a0 Drive just a few hundred yards north until you see the statue of King Kamehameha in the park.\u00a0 Make a left toward him. just a couple miles and turn into town.\u00a0 It is a little &#8220;park&#8221; with a lava tube much nicer than the more popular Thuston tube in Volcano National Park.\u00a0 You must bring a flashlight and OFF (mosquito spray).\u00a0 See my post at: <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/kaumana-caves-state-park\/\">https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/kaumana-caves-state-park\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Go up Highway 11, stopping briefly at Hilo Zoo and Macadamia Nut Factory.\u00a0 Both are free and close to Highway 11.\u00a0 The trick is spending just 20 minutes at each.\u00a0 However, if it is lunch time and you are looking to eat somewhere, the Macadamia Nut Factory has a small cafe and is a pretty place for a light lunch.\u00a0 See my zoo post at:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/hilo-panaewa-zoo\/\">https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/hilo-panaewa-zoo\/<\/a> and my Macadamia Nut Factory post at: <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/mauna-loa-macadamia-nut-company\/\">https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/mauna-loa-macadamia-nut-company\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Stop at Hilo Coffee Mill.\u00a0 If you like coffee and want to see a cute example of an operating mill in the room next door to the shop.\u00a0 It is right off highway 11.\u00a0 See my post at:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/hilo-coffee-mill\/\">https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/hilo-coffee-mill\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Booze up at Volcano Winery and have lunch in the town of Volcano.\u00a0 This is just past the entrance of the Volcano National Park.\u00a0 The wine is a bit odd, but the area is beautiful, the shop is cute, the price is right and the snacks are great.\u00a0 Again, the trick is getting in and out quickly.\u00a0 No need to linger here.\u00a0 See my post at: <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/volcano-winery\/\">https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/volcano-winery\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Enter Volcano National Park for limited time.\u00a0 As of January 2022 you can usually see lava in the caldera as it slowly fills up the caldera.\u00a0 As the employees at the visitor center where to walk to.\u00a0 However, if your highlight is seeing the volcano, this is anti climatic.\u00a0 After this possible lava viewing go half a mile farther and view the steam vents in the parking lot overlooking the crater.\u00a0 For my post on the Volcano National Park, go to: <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/volcano-national-park\/\">https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/activity\/volcano-national-park\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Drive back down Highway 11 and go to Kalapana at the end of Highway 130.\u00a0 It takes about 40 minutes from the intersection of highway 11 and highway 130 to the end of highway 130.\u00a0 Why does highway 130 end?\u00a0 During the 1980s lava destroyed the whole town and covered the highway.\u00a0 Today, brave souls have rebuilt homes.\u00a0 Of course there are NO utilities and access is a struggle.<\/li>\n<li>If you don&#8217;t have time to drive to the end of highway 130 or you have extra time, swing through Leilani estates to view the lava flow in 2018 that destroyed over 700 homes.\u00a0 See my post at: <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/ahalanui-park-warm-ponds-pahoa\/\">www.hilovacationhomes.com\/ahalanui-park-warm-ponds-pahoa\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Dinner at Ponds on Hilo Bay.\u00a0 A nice quiet restaurant overlooking a quiet inlet at the end of Hilo bay.\u00a0 Excellent food.\u00a0 My post is at: <a href=\"https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/hilo-east\/ponds\/\">https:\/\/hilovacationhomes.com\/hilo-east\/ponds\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hilo Hawaii Activities in 2 Days &nbsp;
