Kolekole Park – North Hilo, East Big Island

Address: Highway 19 between 14 and 15 mile marker
As you are driving south into Hilo you will briefly see the Kolekole Park sign on your right. Be careful driving or you will miss it. It is closer to the 14 mile marker than the 15 mile marker and just before the Akaka Falls road. The park is right below the bridge. You get there down a beautiful road that is part of the old Highway 190 (Mamalahoa Highway). Like many Hawaiian destinations, it is free and worth a short visit. Drive down and jump out of the car for a quick relaxing 10 minutes of a river that empties into the ocean. This is the same river at the end of Akaka Falls (see Akaka Falls post). On the weekends it can get crowded, so best to come during the week. As you are leaving turn right instead of left back up to the road. You are driving on the old highway past some very beautiful countryside. After the short loop you are brought back to Highway 190.
