Richardson Beach Park is a must-visit location. It is located just 8 minutes away from the heart of Hilo, across the street from my Hibiscus, Lilikoi, Beaches, and Surfrider homes.  It is one of the 7 stops of the Hop-on Hop-off bus tour. See our short video overview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nr-CK0tnjg&feature=em-subs_digest

This particular beach park is the only black-sand beach in Hilo, that also features lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and of course many picnic areas making it the perfect location to spend the afternoon.

Enjoy the warm waters with easy swimming, diving, surfing, fishing, and snorkeling (sea turtles are often spotted here!). Or instead lay back in the shade and simply enjoy the view.

Here you will enjoy some of the best snorkeling on this side of the Island.  If you need a mask and snorkel, Walmart has them for only $10.  Booties are a good idea for your feet.  The best spot to start your snorkeling is at the black sand beaches.  This is away from the main shore where cold water percolates making cold ocean water that is foggy as it mixes with warm ocean water.
